A Fence is Only as Good as its Gate

Image
I have been looking forward to Saturday ever since I learned that the high would be in the mid 80s.  I woke up early looking forward to a fun day.  When I woke up and got onto our neighborhood Facebook page (I love the drama)  I learned that there was a fire down the street.  I am a pretty heavy sleeper and did not hear a thing.  I looked outside and saw no evidence of fire.  Perplexed, I started looking into what was going on and learned that there was murder in our neighborhood and the a fire was set to cover it up. Weird. Even though the morning started off a bit strange - the rest of the day was great.  In the morning while Sam napped Finn, Michael and I played in the backyard.  It was so nice to run around and not drop dead of heat exhaustion.   It was also the first day that we could leave the windows open in the house. We are also learning that our fence is not as effective as we once believed.  Finn is ...

Two for Two

Image
Not to toot my own horn, but I think I did a pretty good job of registering for my wedding gifts.  I still use and really like most of my kitchen things - with the exception of my toaster.  One of the best choices I made was the Cuisinart ice cream maker.  I make ice cream every Monday night to eat while watching the "Bachelor" with Michael.  Deanna bought the bright red ice cream maker for me which is another reason I like it so much.  Well on Monday night I discovered that Michael and I had run my poor little machine into the ground.  "Darn." So needless to say Michael and I did not have our Monday night ice cream. On Thursday I found the same model on sale at Belk's for half price.  Same model; different color.  My new ice cream maker is lime green!  They crazy summer colors were the only machines on sale, but it was well worth the sale price.  We went as a family to buy the ice cream maker.  I held Sam on my hip and Finn skipp...

The Tallest Tower

Image
On Sunday night I got some great news; my case on Monday morning was continued.  This meant that I got to stay home with Sam and Finn all day Monday.  It has been a busy summer for me and I haven't had nearly as many home days as I normally have. After breakfast Finn pulled his blocks out.  He told me that he wanted to build the "tallest tower" like the one from Tangled.   The picture above was of his first, and tallest, tower.  He built several more after this one toppled.   Sam spent most of the morning playing with his toys.  Later in the day I took both of the boys to the courthouse to pick up a file. A "stay at home" lawyer's job is never done. Poor little Sam catches so much grief at the courthouse.  The clerks love him; but they especially love to make fun of his hair.  Finn  discovered the water fountain and drenched himself.

Promotion Sunday

Image
Sunday was "Promotion Sunday" at church.  We have been preparing Finn for his new Sunday School class for a week.  On our way to church we reinforced over and over that he will really like his new class.  When we got to the nursery area Finn and I started walking around looking for his new class.  Our church has an enormous kid area with probably 40 classrooms.  It took me a while to find Finn's room. On the way we walked right past Finn's old Sunday school teacher.  He (Finn's teacher) got really excited and said "let's go to Sunday School Finn!"  He meant it in a general since, but Finn took it very literally.  He let go of my hand and ran over to his old teacher.  His face was heartbreaking when he finally understood that he had to go meet a new teacher.  To say Finn doesn't like change is an understatement.  When we arrived at his new room Finn walked right in.  I assumed he was fine so I turned to leave.  H...

The Wedding Shower

Image
On Saturday, Finn, Sam and I got up very early.  Finn ran downstairs and went straight to the pantry.  He grabbed the pancake mix box and asked me to make him some pancakes.  Well, the box was almost empty so I asked Finn if he would rather have biscuits instead.  I guess he did because he ate three enormous biscuits. After Finn ate breakfast we woke Daddy up and then I left to meet my good friends at our "first Saturday of the month" breakfast at Mimi's.  This is my new favorite event of the month.  After arriving home I decided that it was time to start a new baby food with Sam; something I have been dreading.  Sam has done really well with sweet potatoes which is completely understandable since sweet potatoes are actually pretty good.  There is absolutely nothing appetizing about baby green beans. I almost gag every time I open the container.  I grabbed several towels expecting a messy disaster - I didn't have to use one.  Sam ate...

Do the Inch Worm

Image
Sweet little Sam is getting closer and closer to crawling.  Right now he is doing what I refer to as the "inchworm"  He raises his body off the floor, brings his hands and feet as close together as he can (which, truth be told, isn't very far) and then plops down.  It looks terribly difficult and not particularly  time efficient - but effective nonetheless.  Sam can pretty much get to wherever he wants to go.  It takes him a while, but he is semi-mobile.  He spends a lot of time on his belly in the floor reaching for any toys he sees.  Today he spent the day in my office completely destroying my files.  Somehow he opened my files and crumpled the papers inside.  When I put the files behind him he would immediately pick his hands and feet off of the ground and swivel around to get the file again. The speed at which he did this was unsettling. Last night Finn asked me to play in his room.  In the middle of making me a hambur...

The Fruits of our Labor

Image
Yesterday (July 30, 2012) was our 7th wedding anniversary.  Seven years of marriage and what do we have to show for it . . . only the sweetest little blokes a mom could ask for.  I don't get mushy on this blog very often, but I am so thankful for my marriage, for my boys and for Michael.  He is a wonderful father, a very patient husband and he single handedly takes care of my "load dropping" cat.  Anyone who knows Michael knows that he works very hard at his job and is punctual as they come - clearly this last sentence is a joke:)  To celebrate on our actual anniversary Michael and I met for lunch downtown at Amerigos.  It was closing in on 2:00 when we got there so the place was practically empty.  We had a groupon gift card so we went all out - meaning, I ordered the catch of the day and an appetizer. When we got home Michael and Finn started emptying the kiddie pool.  After a three hundred dollar water bill two years ago, we do...
