Hawaii Day 6: The North Shore
On Day 6 we met Tommy and Deniece in our lobby and caught a ride with them to the North Shore. The North Shore was about an hours ride from our hotel so Tommy and Deniece rented a car. The North Shore is famous for big waves and I wanted to see them. On the way there we passed the Dole Planation - there were pineapples growing everywhere.
We arrived at the North Shore around lunchtime. We stopped at Ted's Bakery for a quick bite. Then it was off to find beach chairs and umbrellas. We settled on a nice piece of beach somewhere around "Sunset Beach." Deniece really wanted to see the famous "pipeline" wave. We think that we were in the general vicinity, but I can't be sure.
The waves were incredible. I have never seen such powerful waves in my entire life. While looking at the waves you think that you have a good grasp of how big they are and then you see a surfer on the wave and realize that they are way bigger. We watched the waves and the surfers from around 1:30 to 5:30. It was a very relaxing day.
The water was freezing! Big shock.
David, Sharon, James and Chelsea took a car to the North Shore too and decided to hike to a waterfall in Weimae Bay. After their hike they met us on the beach.
We stayed to watch the sunset.
After the sun was down we traveled back to our hotel to get ready for New Years Eve dinner. We decided to go to Outback. I was in the mood for a steak and it was close to our room. After supper we went to Tommy and Deniece's room to watch the video footage David had taken earlier in the week.
At a few minutes to midnight we walked down to the lagoon to watch the fireworks over the ocean. The fireworks were set off at Midnight (Hawaii time).
The "selfie."
Not a bad way to welcome 2014.
